In place of the 'taught' course, the Degree Committee, after considering the candidate's experience, qualifications and proposed subject, may grant special permission for him or her to offer a thesis of not more than 25,000 words in length, including footnotes and appendices but excluding bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee. In this option, an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field in which it falls will be required.
The successful applicant will be assigned a supervisor upon entry and all choices of papers, exercises and thesis topics must be discussed with the supervisor as early as possible in the academic year.
Where possible, we would encourage you to discuss your particular interests with potential supervisors before applying; a list of the relevant teaching officers with their fields of expertise can be found on the teaching staff page.
