Summer Bursaries for Korean Language Study in Korea

Robinson College is pleased to announce a competition for summer bursaries for two undergraduate students in the Department of East Asian Studies to study the Korean language in Korea in Summer 2012. The bursaries have been made possible through a grant from the Academy of Korean Studies under its Strategic Initiative for Korean Studies. Fourth-year students expecting to graduate in 2012 are also eligible to apply.

Each recipient will receive a sum of £2,100, which is expected to cover the cost of a plane ticket, tuition, and living expenses. Students must fly on either Korean Air or Asiana Airlines and are responsible for obtaining their own insurance. Recipients are required to attend one of the following programs for at least four weeks:

  • Ewha Language Center, Ewha Woman’s University
  • Ganada Korean Language Institute
  • Korean Language Center, Sogang University
  • Korean Language Institute, Yonsei University

Applicants must submit the following materials to the pigeonhole of Dr. Michael Shin in Robinson College by 5:00 pm on 20th January, 2012.

  1. letter of reference from your Director of Studies
  2. letter of reference from your Tutor
  3. one-page essay explaining why you want to study Korean and what personal meaning such an experience would have for you

Decisions will be made by the Korean Studies Committee and will be announced in early February. The bursary will be given to the recipients upon presentation of a valid plane ticket receipt and a letter of admission from a language school. After their return from Korea, students must submit a report and a transcript from the language school to the committee by the first day of Michaelmas Term 2012.
