SG Stephen Ranulph Kingdon Glanville (1900-56), EygptologistStephen Glanville was born in London, 26 April 1900. He was educated at Marlborough and Lincoln College, Oxford, BA, 1922, MA, 1926. He worked for the Egyptian Government Service, 1922, and then joined the Egypt Exploration Society expedition to Amarna, 1923. He studied Egyptology with Francis Llewellyn Griffith and was appointed Assistant in the Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum, 1924. He married Ethel Mary Chubb, 1925. He excavated at Amarna, 1925, and Armant, 1928. He was Laycock Student of Egyptology at Worcester College, Oxford, 1929-35, and Reader in Egytology, 1933-5, and Edwards Professor of Egyptology, 1935-9, at University College, London. He served with the Royal Air Force (Air Staff), 1939-45. He was a fellow, 1946-54, and Provost, 1954-6, of King's College, Cambridge, and Herbert Thompson Professor of Egytology at Cambridge University, 1946-56. He was Honorary Secretary, 1928-31 and 1933-6, and Chairman of Committee, 1951-6, of the Egypt Exploration Society.
