FG Frederick William Green (1869-1949), Egyptologist
Frederick Green was born in London, 1869. He was educated
at Jesus College, Cambridge, BA, 1898, MA, 1901. He studied Egyptology
under Kurt Sethe at
Göttingen
and Strasbourg and excavated sites in Egypt with Flinders Petrie and
Somers Clarke, including El Kab, 1895-7. He worked with James Quibell
at Hirakonpolis,
1897-8, and alone, 1898-9, when he discovered the famous decorated
tomb. He returned to El Kab with Somers Clarke and Archibald Sayce, 1901-2.
He also worked as a mapmaker for the Geological Survey of Egypt, 1896-8,
and on several subsequent expeditions with William Hume in the Eastern
and Western Deserts. He was
involved in surveying the topography and monuments of Nubia, 1906 and
1909-10. He led the Mond excavation of the Bucheum at Armant, 1929-30.
He was Honorary
Keeper of Antiquities at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, 1908-49.
He died in Great Shelford,
Cambridgeshire, 1949.

The collection mainly comprises manuscripts, notebooks, correspondence,
maps and drawings relating to the following excavations and surveys:
Hierakonpolis, 1898-1900; El Kab, 1896, 1902; the Bucheum, 1930; Nubia,
1906, 1909-10; the Eastern Desert, 1897-1900,
1902, 1910; the Fayum and the Western Desert, 1908-9.

The Library holds a collection of Green's photographs of
Egypt, Sudan and England, comprising 22 boxes of glass plate negatives,
negatives,
lantern slides and prints (uncatalogued). In addition, a number of
published maps from the Green collection are
catalogued separately in the Listing of Atlases and Maps (ref:
M.3.3.1-11). Some of the documents in the collection relating to
Hierakonpolis may be viewed on microfilm and, where possible, this
has been indicated
in the catalogue.
