Reader in Chinese History
Dr J. P. McDermott researches in the social history of China in the period from the Song to the Qing Dynasties. He also has an interest in the history of Chinese art. He has published numerous articles and reviews on land tenure, family organisation and local history and has edited and contributed to 'Art and Power in East Asia' (Tokyo, 1989). He has edited 'State and Court Ritual in China' (C.U.P., 1998) and at present he is writing books on Sung economic history and on the history of lineages in south China during the Ming (1368-1644) dynasty.
