This section of the bibliography covers the centuries between the establishment of the
Kamakura Bakufu and the Battle of Sekigahara. The activities of European traders and
missionaries in Japan in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are not included
here, for they are the subject of a separate section of the bibliography dealing with
foreign relations.
There is a critical bibliography of English language materials on
all aspects of the Momoyama period in B. L. Smith, 'Japanese society and culture in
the Momoyama Era: a bibliographic essay', in G. Elison & B. L. Smith, eds,
Warlords, artists, and commoners; Japan in the sixteenth century (University Press of
Hawaii,1981)
