Frederick William Green

FG Frederick William Green (1869-1949), Egyptologist

Frederick Green was born in London, 1869. He was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, BA, 1898, MA, 1901. He studied Egyptology under Kurt Sethe at Göttingen and Strasbourg and excavated sites in Egypt with Flinders Petrie and Somers Clarke, including El Kab, 1895-7. He worked with James Quibell at Hirakonpolis, 1897-8, and alone, 1898-9, when he discovered the famous decorated tomb. He returned to El Kab with Somers Clarke and Archibald Sayce, 1901-2. He also worked as a mapmaker for the Geological Survey of Egypt, 1896-8, and on several subsequent expeditions with William Hume in the Eastern and Western Deserts. He was involved in surveying the topography and monuments of Nubia, 1906 and 1909-10. He led the Mond excavation of the Bucheum at Armant, 1929-30. He was Honorary Keeper of Antiquities at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, 1908-49. He died in Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire, 1949.
