Japanese Summer School for School Students
18th - 20th August, 2014
The Department of East Asian Studies, in conjunction with Corpus Christi College, is offering a summer school in Japanese aimed at students with an interest in studying Japanese at university. The summer school will give students an opportunity to immerse themselves in the Cambridge learning experience, with taster classes in Japanese language, society, history, film and literature delivered by experienced teaching staff from the Department of East Asian Studies. There will also be behind-the-scenes tours of Japanese collections contained in the Fitzwilliam Museum and the University Library.
Accommodation and meals, including a formal dinner, will be at the historic Corpus Christi College in the centre of town, a short walk from where classes will be held at the Department of East Asian Studies.
This summer school is an excellent opportunity for interested students to learn more about Japan and to discover what it would be like to study at Cambridge. In addition to language and culture classes, there will also be sessions on applying to the University. The Japanese studies resources at the University of Cambridge are considerable and this will give students considering studying Japanese at Cambridge an opportunity to get a glimpse of them and to get a feel of what it would be like to be a student at Corpus Christi College and/or to study Japanese at Cambridge.
Three meals a day, tuition and accommodation (2 nights) are all free of charge. Participants will need to make their own travel arrangements and that is the only expense they will have apart from spending money.
The Summer school is open to Students about to enter year 13.
Students wish to attend the Summer School should be nominated by their schools and write a short (250 word) essay on why they wish to attend. The nominating teacher is asked to provide a short personalised statement in support of the student’s application. The application form can be downloaded here.
The nominations close on Monday, 23rd June and all applicants will be notified of the outcome by Monday, 7th July.
