To complement the exhibition Epic of the Persian Kings: The Art of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, The Fitzwilliam Museum has arranged a series of traditional and contemporary Iranian concerts celebrating the influence of the Shahnameh literary epic on Persian art and culture.

See the exhibition during the day; be inspired by the music at night.

Exhibition ends on Sunday, 9th January, 2011.

Concert programme:

  • Thursday, 4th November, 2010
    from 18:30 to 20:30 in Gallery 3

    Abbas Bakhtiari, Arash Moradi and Mohamad Merati
    A flamboyant performance of Iranian song and music
    played on traditional instruments inspired by the Shanameh.
     

  • Saturday, 11th December, 2010
    from 18:30 to 20:30 in Gallery 3

    Tara Kamangar, Piano
    A concert of compositions for piano inspired by the Shahnameh, complemented by pieces by Khachaturian and Rachmaninoff.

    With a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach to Behzad Ranjbaran, Tara's career highlights have included performances at London's Cadogan Hall, Washington DC's National Gallery of Art, New York City's Skirball Auditorium, Oakland's Paramount Theatre, and LA's Walt Disney Hall. Praised as a "huge talent" (London's Evening Standard) and a "world class-musician who excels at blending the best of Western and Middle-Eastern compositions" (Gulf News), Tara brings audiences rarely-heard works by Iranian composers of the past century.
