Top Prize to a Cambridge Student in a UK Varsity Chinese Competition

A 4th-year student from the Department of East Asian Studies, Miss Frances Gregory (Selwyn College), won the top prize at the 7th UK Varsity Chinese Competition, which was held at the London School of Economics and Political Science on 15th March 2008.

Eleven students representing different universities in the U.K. participated in the competition, at which students had to do various tasks in Chinese including making speeches, giving Chinese artistic performances, answering questions about Chinese history, culture, society, geography, current affairs, etc. Miss Gregory impressed the judges and the audience by getting a full score in answering questions related to architecture in Beijing, Chinese proverbs, Chinese traditional embroidery, etc. In her speech, she used both Chinese and Western examples to argue against the biased view that women were inferior to men. She also gave a performance of Chinese sword-dancing, which was enthusiastically received by the audience.

Miss Gregory’s teacher, Miss Pei-yi Wu, a Lector in Chinese at the Department of East Asian Studies, was awarded the prize for Best Instructor. This is the third time that Cambridge has sent a representative to participate in the competition and Cambridge has won the top prize in every competition it has participated in.

Miss Gregory will represent the U.K. in the 2008 World Varsity Chinese Competition to be held in China in July 2008.
