Transferable Skills at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies

All postgraduate students who arrive at the University of Cambridge should make the most of their time here and ensure that they develop their transferable skills and abilities. This is particularly important for all new PhD students who join the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. The Degree Committee now requires all research students to attend at least three seminars, workshops or courses a term.

Relevant transferable skills courses can be taken at the School of Arts and Humanities, Graduate Development Programme, Centre for Personal and Professional Development, Computer Service, and also through other Faculties and Departments at the University i.e. MML, Divinity, History, Politics and International Studies (POLIS) and Politics, Psychology, Sociology and International Studies (PPSIS). To find out about courses across the University visit the Cambridge University Skills Portal.

Transferable Skills courses, whether they are relevant to your research or more generic by nature, will assist you with your research during your time at the Faculty and certainly help you with the final stages of writing up your thesis and give you that extra edge when you apply for jobs – this is especially relevant in the current economic climate.

It is important for all research students at the Faculty to choose any suitable transferable skills courses, seminars or workshops that could improve your writing skill and your cognitive thought processes and help you to acquire an analytical writing style which will help you to achieve your intellectual aspirations which in turn will assist you in your career development.

Keep a record of any courses, seminars or workshops, which you attend during your time at the Faculty. Transferable skills courses are increasingly becoming important in the School of Arts and Humanities to which the Faculty belongs. Make sure that you always inform your supervisor of any relevant transferable skills courses, seminars or workshops which you attend.
