Course costs

Fees

Information on fees, including Year Abroad fees, can be found in the Finance section of the study.cam.ac.uk pages. The level of the tuition fee is set on admission and is likely to increase annually roughly in line with inflation.

Fees for the Year Abroad

For Home students undertaking a full year abroad, the tuition fee currently payable to the University of Cambridge will be 15% of the tuition fee for that year.  For specific figures see the Year Abroad Tuition Fees section of the Finance section's tuition fees page.

Additional course costs

AMES undergraduate students incur expenses for the following (Please refer to the relevant subject area websites to find out about subject-specific costs, such as course books, etc., and to the Year Abroad website to find out about costs for the year spent abroad):

  • Photocopying and printing: in the Faculty, use of the printers cost 5p per A4 sheet in black and white, and 20p per A4 sheet in colour. In future years, the cost of printing in the Faculty may rise above that quoted.
  • Text books / course books: The Faculty, University and College libraries are well-stocked and it shouldn’t be necessary to purchase more than a handful of books in any year.  However, some students may spend £300 or more on specific texts in a given year.
  • Your College and department, together with the University Computing Service, will provide you with all the computing facilities you'll need for your academic work. You'll have a University email account, and access to central file storage for your work and for publishing web pages. Some colleges may charge for internet / wireless connection but fast free wifi is available throughout the university.
  • Year Abroad costs: Students are expected to cover their daily living costs and any travel costs associated with their year abroad. For most UK/EU students and most Year Abroad activities, the normal student loans are available to cover maintenance costs and fees.
  • Non-Compulsory Study Abroad: Although the core element of language immersion is the Year Abroad, students may wish to make use of some of their vacations during the other three years of their degree to travel to the countries where their chosen languages are spoken. Such travel is not a compulsory part of the course, though obviously beneficial. The cost of such travel is hugely variable, depending on the cost of getting to your destination, on living costs once you have arrived, and on what you choose to do. Unfortunately, the Faculty will not be in a position to financially support such travel.
