'The Geography of Injustice: East Asia's Battle between Memory and History' is out now

Dr Lydia Wilson, an affiliated reasercher at this Faculty, has recent published an article in New Lines magazine investigating how works published in 1855 by Walt Whitman and Faris al-Shidyaq, one in English and the other in Arabic, were shaped by similar concerns with a newly emerging world.

The Centre of Islamic Studies (CIS) invites submissions for ten-minute papers on any aspect of Arabic literature. Please send an abstract of no more than 250 words and brief biographical information to camstan.arablit@gmail.com by 31st March 2024. Participation is restricted to doctoral students. Funding will be available to offset travel and visa costs, and accommodation will be provided. Further information on travel reimbursements will be sent to participants upon acceptance of their proposal.

Dr Mahbod Ghaffari has been awarded the 2024 Pilkington Prize for Teaching Excellence. Twelve prizes are awarded every year by the Vice Chancellor to individuals who make an outstanding contribution to the teaching programme in a Department, Faculty or the University as a whole.

In The Geography of Injustice, Barak Kushner argues that the war crimes tribunals in East Asia formed and cemented national divides that persist into the present day. In 1946 the Allies convened the Tokyo Trial to prosecute Japanese wartime atrocities and Japan's empire. At its conclusion one of the judges voiced dissent, claiming that the justice found at Tokyo was only "the sham employment of a legal process for the satisfaction of a thirst for revenge."
