Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years.

The Department of East Asian Studies is seeking to appoint to a 3-year, fixed-term postdoctoral research associate post in Japanese Studies. The post will start in September 2019 and last until August 2022. We are open to any speciality within Japanese Studies but preference will be given to candidates whose research and teaching interests complement those of the current staff. We also welcome applications from candidates who embody our "Japan and the World" campaign and with an interest in comparative studies in relation to the rest of East Asia.

Appointees will be expected to engage in high-level research, to publish in their specialist field, and to contribute to teaching, supervising and the examination of undergraduates (and perhaps masters students).

The successful candidate will have, or will be expected to develop, his or her own independent research portfolio of world class research commensurate with the international reputation of the faculty.

Teaching responsibilities will include:

  • contributing to undergraduate and graduate courses
     
  • supervising undergraduate and MPhil projects
     
  • examining undergraduate and MPhil students

Education and Qualifications The applicant should have completed his or her PhD, submitted their thesis and had their viva (if necessary) by the time he or she arrives at Cambridge for the start of the position. A thorough knowledge of at least one East Asian language is expected. Candidates will be expected during their time at Cambridge to teach one text and translation class to undergraduates.

Evidence of high-quality research outputs, including publication in leading journals and conferences in the field, or at least the promise of during their time of employment, is expected.

Evidence of ability to work together with colleagues in a collegial and collaborative manner is expected as is evidence of broad and cross-disciplinary research interests.

Salary: £26,243-£30,395 (Research Assistant) or £32,236-£39,609 (Research Associate).
