Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies


The University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint a teaching associate to provide temporary cover for the Sir Thomas Adams' Professor of Arabic (1632). This is a fixed term post for 12 months, to begin on 1st September, 2019. 

The successful candidate will be qualified to PhD level in either Classical or Modern Arabic literature and will join the team of Middle Eastern Studies instructors in delivering a stimulating programme for bright and highly motivated students. The teaching associate will be required to contribute substantially to the teaching of Arabic literature in all years of the undergraduate Tripos. This will include a small number of lectures in first year courses introducing the Middle East, some Classical and Modern components of the second year course, 'Intermediate Literary Arabic', and some Classical and Modern components of the fourth year course 'Advanced Literary Arabic', as determined in consultation with the Head of Department. The teaching associate may also supervise a small number of final year undergraduate dissertations and MPhil students and contribute to the team-taught MPhil course, 'Theory and Method in Middle Eastern Studies'. They will also work with colleagues in Arabic literature and the Department as a whole to set and mark exams and essay assignments and will be expected to cooperate effectively with faculty administrative staff. The post holder will work under the general leadership of the Head of Department and, in the case of graduate teaching, the Director of Graduate Studies.
