Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies

Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Open Day 2020

The AMES Open Day will take place on Friday 13th March.

Update: 11 March 2020

We are planning to go ahead with the Open Day and will advise participants as soon as possible if this changes.

Please note that this event will be taking place during a period of industrial action and the timetable may therefore be subject to change, with possibly fewer talks. Availability of staff at the information stands may also be affected.

We are monitoring the situation with Coronavirus and are adhering to current government and University guidance on the subject. We strongly recommend that visitors refer to the government response webpages and ask everyone to check our website and social media channels for updates. More information on how to prevent the spread of the virus can be found on the NHS Coronavirus-COVID19 information page and we encourage you to follow this advice.

In addition, we ask that you do not attend the Open Day if you:

§  You feel unwell with cold or flu like symptoms

§  Have recently returned from an area affected by a coronavirus outbreak

§  Have been exposed to anyone who may have contracted the disease

Please also consider your own health and any medical conditions you have.

Please get in touch with us if you have any specific questions or concerns, or if you are unable to attend.

There will be hand sanitiser and tissues available in each of the main event spaces, and all visitors/participating staff/students are encouraged to avoid physical contact.

Please navigate to our booking page to register to attend the Open Day.

Information submitted via this form will be used only for the purpose of administering this open day. It will then be destroyed within three months.

Programme for the day:

09.30 - 10.00 Registration (in the Foyer at Newnham College)*

10.00 - 11.00 Course information presentations

11.00 - 11.30 Applying to Cambridge

11.30 - 12.00 Academics available to answer your questions

12.00 - 14.00 College lunches and tours (booking required)

*NB The registration desk will remain open throughout the morning for those participants travelling from further afield.

The Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics (MMLL) will be running an Open Day at the same time and information on combining Middle Eastern Studies with an MMLL language will be available.

Information stands

There will be stands for AMES and each Section of MMLL where you will have the opportunity to meet current staff and students. Information stands will be open between 09:30-12:00 and 14:00-16:00. Please note that the timing for individual subject areas may change subject to staff and student availability.

General information

The day is aimed at Year 12 and mature students who are considering applying in the next application round. For information on events aimed at younger students, please see the Cambridge Admissions Office's page on Widening Participation and the Language Centre's Outreach pages.

Any queries about the AMES Open Day should be directed to ug_progadmin@ames.cam.ac.uk.

The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies also participates in the Cambridge Open Days in July each year. Please also see the Cambridge Admissions Office website for more information on Open Days and Access events.

Please note: We are expecting to be very limited on space in the lecture rooms this year, so we will prioritise allowing prospective students into the talks. This will mean that parents and teachers may not be able to sit in on the talks as well. We will judge on the day whether this is necessary, depending on final numbers attending; if this is necessary, parents and teachers will of course still be welcome in open areas, both during the talks and at other times.

Parking and how to find us

The event will take place at Newnham College, just next to the Sidgwick Site. Click here to find Newnham on a map

Unfortunately we are not able to offer parking at the College, for either individual or school groups. If you are a Blue Badge holder, please contact us for details of accessible parking.

We recommend that visitors either come to Cambridge on the train, or use the Park & Ride facilities, which are served by the Universal bus route.  For route map, click here. Timetables and further information for the Universal bus service are available from the University’s Environment and Energy website. Further information about Park & Ride can be found on the County Council’s website. For any Park and Ride queries, please call the County Council on 0345 045 5213 or email parkride@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

By car

The College's postcode is CB3 9DF. Sidgwick Avenue is just off the A603 and approximately 2 miles from junction 12 on the M11.

Please note that Silver Street is closed to cars for part of the day, and has a 'tidal flow' system for the rest. At most times it will be easier, when approaching the College from the southern part of Cambridge, to use Fen Causeway.

By rail

There are regular train services from London (King's Cross and Liverpool Street) and from the North and Midlands. The Universal Bus route has a stop at the train station and the closest stop to Newnham is on Grange Road.

By coach

A frequent coach service runs between London (Victoria Coach Station) and Cambridge.

By air

Stansted is the nearest international airport. There are regular coach services from Cambridge to all London airports, and train services from Stansted to Cambridge (see the links above).

Tourist information

The city centre is just a short walk from the College. The Tourist Information Centre is in the Guildhall (entrance from Peas Hill). Telephone number: 0871 226 8006. Guided tours of the city are arranged daily from the Tourist Information Centre where tickets can be bought.

Accommodation

Unfortunately we are not able to offer event participants any accommodation or help with booking accommodation.
