汉语语言学与二语习得研讨会

Research Seminar on Chinese Linguistics & Chinese as a Second Language given by Xu, Lilong

Chinese is a pro-drop language which allows not only null subjects but also null objects in matrix sentences, embedded sentences and subordinate clauses. But in some cases, the seemingly absence of subjects and objects in Chinese are the result of ellipsis. This empirical study aims to look at covert arguments caused by ellipsis in L2 Chinese by adult L1 English speakers, and also tries to investigate the null arguments and their interpretations in L2 Chinese by adult L1 English speakers. To reach these goals, the study consists of an Information Seeking Task, a Cross-modal Priming Task, a Picture Judgement Task, an Acceptance Judgement Task and a Self-paced Reading Task. The design of these tasks will be presented in the seminar.
