This lecture studies the difficulties that befall the teaching of the
humanities in Egyptian Universities. It argues that as is the situation
within the larger Arab World, the humanities are in crises in Egypt.
This crises stems from a complete lack of support by public figures;

major, and the depressing state of the country’s museums and archives
are cited as particularly poignant signs of the crises of humanities in

Khaled Fahmy is His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Professor of Modern Arabic Studies at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of King's College. His research interests include the social and cultural history of the modern Middle East, with an emphasis on the history of law, medicine, the army and the police in nineteenth-century Egypt. In addition to his academic publications, he also writes for the press in both Arabic and English.

The talk will last about one hour and will be followed by a Q&A session with the speaker.
