General online resources

Below you will find a list of general resources which may be useful to your research, including information about the Cambridge University Library as well as other local, national and international resources.

Region and language specific resources can be accessed using the menu on the left.

Cambridge University Library

The University Library offers many resources which may be of interest to our students, much of which is searchable on their core database, iDiscover.

Subject and Region Specific Resources

  • The University Library has collections specific to Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, as well as collections from organisations such as the Royal Commonwealth Society. Along with information on accessing the collections themselves, these webpages contain information about further suggested online resources. 

Cambridge Digital Library

  • The University's digital library is a portal to "digitised material and research outputs from the University of Cambridge and beyond".

Inter-Library Loan Department

  • The Inter-Library Loan department allows students and staff to order books and journals. Staff and PhD students of the Faculty can order inter-library books through the Faculty Librarian.

Libguides

  • A comprehensive record of library databases made availiable via the University Library with accompanying usage guides. Records are searchable by type and by subject. 

iDisover Search Advice - Chinese

  • iDiscover can be searched in Chinese but transliteration is advised since not all bibliographic records have been updated to include Chinese script.

 



Online Resources from other Institutions

Bodleian Libraries

The University of Oxford's libraries offer various resources which may be of use to our students. Libraries across the university are searchable via SOLO. 

 



British Library

The British Library offers various services and resources which may be of interest to our students.

British Library Document Supply Centre

  • For ordering journal articles or books. Alternatively, you could do it through the Inter-Library Loan Department at the Cambridge University Library. Staff and PhD students of the Faculty can order inter-library books through the Faculty Librarian.

 



Cambridge Companions Online

RAVEN password is needed outside the Cambridge University network.



Cambridge University Language Centre Resources

Resources at the Language Centre includes films, documentaries, Raven password protected online videos. Please note that some of the resources are not borrowable, but are available on instant access for use in the Language Centre.



COPAC (Academic and National Library Catalogue)

Gives free access to the merged online catalogues of major University and National Libraries in the UK and Ireland, including the British Library.

It is searchable in Chinese, either in Pinyin transcription or in characters.



EThOS (Electronic Thesis Online Service)

EThOS aims to hold a record for all doctoral theses awarded by all UK universities (institutions). There are some gaps which they are gradually filling, but there is a record for at least 90% of all UK theses, some 340,000 records. 

EThOS also provides free, direct access to the full text of as many theses as possible (approximately 160,000 at present). It achieves this by harvesting e-theses from Institutional Repositories and by digitising paper based theses as they are ordered by researchers using the system. 

 



Factiva

Provides access to a wide range of information from newspapers, news wires, websites, company reports and more (over 36,000 sources) from 200 countries and 28 languages. Continuously updated. Searchable in Japanese by keyword via iDiscover. Alternatively, search Factiva itself by selecting the language.



Harvard University Libraries

Harvard University library has various resources which may be of interest to our students, including their own research guides with reccomended materials. 



Oxford Dictionaries Online

English and foreign language dictionaries, searchable online. 

Available on and off campus (you may have to login using RAVEN).



Oxford Reference Online

Brings together language and subject reference works from one of the world's biggest reference publishers into a single cross-searchable resource. The core collection contains over 100 dictionary, lnguage reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press. Fully indexed. (Contains dictionaries in every subject: Art and Architecture, Classics, Computing, English Dictionaries & thesauruses, English Language Reference e.g. Dictionary of Abbreviations, Grammar, History, Literature and many more. Also includes bilingual dictionaries: French, German, Italian, Latin, Spanish, Welsh and Irish).



ProQuest Digital Dissertations & Theses

Accessible via cam domain or using RAVEN password outside the cam domain.

The University Library subscribes to this collection of dissertations and theses from around the world, spanning from 1743 to the present day.  Access is to abstracts only. Full text can be purchased online via ProQuest directly or by contacting the Cambridge University Library's (UL) Inter-Library Department.



School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) Library

The SOAS library has various resources that may be of use to our students. 



World of Learning

Tool for finding out addresses of higher educational institutions around the world and email addresses of the people who work within them. Regularly updated. 

You will need a RAVEN password if you want to use it outside the Cambridge domain.



WorldCat

Essential general database comprising electronic catalogue of thousands of libraries. All American East Asian holdings are available here. When using the database, please note the following: libraries may differ in whether retrospective electronic conversion of their holding has taken place for CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) books.
