DICTIONARIES

Oxford English Dictionary Online (O.U.P.)

Oxford Reference Online 
Brings together language and subject reference works from one of the world's biggest reference publishers into a single cross-searchable resource. The core collection contains over 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxfrod University Press. Fully indexed. (Contains dictionaries in every subject: Art and Architecture, Classics, Computing, English Dictionaries & thesauruses, English Language Reference e.g. Dictionary of Abbreviations, Grammar, History, Literature and many more. Also includes bilingual dictionaries: French, German, Italian, Latin, Spanish, Welsh and Irish).

 

DISSERTATIONS

EThOS (Electronic Thesis Online Service)
EThOS aims to hold a record for all doctoral theses awarded by all UK universities (institutions). There are some gaps which they are gradually filling, but there is a record for at least 90% of all UK theses, some 340,000 records. 
EThOS also provides free, direct access to the full text of as many theses as possible (approximately 160,000 at present). It achieves this by harvesting e-theses from Institutional Repositories and by digitising paper based theses as they are ordered by researchers using the system.   Equivalent services in other countries see http://www.ndltd.org/resources/find-etds.

ProQuest Digital Dissertations & Theses 
(Accessible via cam domain or using RAVEN password outside the cam domain.)

The University Library subscribes to this collection of dissertations and theses from around the world, spanning from 1743 to the present day.  Access is to abstracts only. Full text can be purchased online via ProQuest directly or by contacting the Cambridge University Library's (UL) Inter-Library Department.

Factiva
Provides access to a wide range of information from newspapers, news wires, websites, company reports and more (over 36,000 sources) from 200 countries and 28 languages. Continuously updated. Searchable in Japanese by keyword via iDiscover. Alternatively, search Factiva itself by selecting the language.

Periodicals Index Online
Subscription-based. Raven password is required outside cam domain. A database of millions of citations for articles published in the arts, humanities and social sciences, across more than 300 years. It covers journals from North America, the United Kingdom and the rest of the English speaking world and journals in other European languages including French, German, Italian and Spanish. It enables researchers quickly and comprehensively to identify articles relevant to their field of study.

Ulrich's Global Serials Directory
Subscription-based. Raven password is required outside cam domain. 
A continuously updated source of information on more than a quarter of a million periodicals and serials published throughout the world.It includes scholarly journals, annuals, conference proceedings, trade publications, newspapers, and electronic publications, deriving data from over 80,000 U.S. and foreign publications.

Cambridge University Language Centre Resources 
Resources at the Language Centre includes films, documentaries, Raven password protected online videos. Please note that some of the resources are not borrowable, but are available on instant access for use in the Language Centre.

World of Learning
Tool for finding out addresses of higher educational institutions around the world and email addresses of the people who work within them. Regularly updated. You will need a RAVEN password if you want to use it outside the Cambridge domain.

Asia Findouter 
Provides access to China, India and Singapore search engines.

CrossAsia 
The East and Southeast Asia Virtual Library developed by the East Asia Department of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and its project partners. It offers access to research information in East and Southeast Asian studies. Main features include meta-search of more than 16 library catalogues in Western and Asian languages; 'Databases' provides access to selected databases (articles) which are subject to licence (users have to register with CrossAsia); 'Online Guide East Asia': a collection of links to electronic resources of interest to East and South Asian Studies; 'Digital Collection': portal to digitised sources of special collection area of the Staadsbibliothek in Berlin.

Google Scholar and Google Advanced Scholar harvest academic publications better than searching via general Google.

Intute
Supported by the Art & Humanities Research Council. Actively this service maintains an expanding database of over 100,000 high quality websites and Internet resources that are relevant to academic work in Arts & Humanities, Social Scieneces, Science Engineering and Technology, and Health and Life Sciences. Offers virtual training.
