A Book to Save Society:
Al-Jahiz's Book of Living Creatures

Cambridge Muslim Collge
Public Lecture

To be given on Wednesday, 17th November, 2010 at 6:00pm in the Runcie Room at the Faculty of Divinity, West Road, Cambridge [map], by

Professor James Montgomery
(Department of Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cambridge)

The Book of Living Creatures is the longest and the most important work to have been written by al-Jahiz (d. 868/9), the 'father of Arabic prose'. It is a dense and complex work of several thousand pages which offers a Mu'tazilite vision of God's creation. It has hardly been studied by modern scholars. This talk will present one of the ways in which we might consider reading it.
