Conference Abstract

The Foundations of Arabic Linguistics conference (FAL V) is back home in Cambridge! From early on the reception of the Kitāb and its author’s contribution to Arabic grammar have not escaped controversy. The conference will focus on the challenges to the Kitāb’s status during the formative and medieval periods of Arabic grammatical activities.

Papers are invited to evaluate Sībawayhi’s achievement through the lens of critical grammarians and works dedicated to refuting the Quran of the Arabic grammar. The radd genre will be highlighted and Kitāb’s fate as a target of neglect and criticism explored. The conference is interdisciplinary. It intends to bring together Arabists, specialists in linguistics and research students to engage in a dialogue with the aim of creating a framework to promote scholarship and provide a forum for the discussion of the influence exercised by the Kitāb on shaping the debate on Arab linguistics.
