Modelscapes of Memory: The valley of the communities at Yad Vashem
    Dr Yael Paddan, architect

This valley in Jerusalem is a landscape memorial to the Jewish communities destroyed in the Holocaust. Its plan roughly resembles a map of Central and Eastern Europe. Embedded into the Mount of Remembrance, the Valley symbolically incorporates the destroyed communities both in space and in time. This presentation explores how the memorial’s reference to the geography of destruction provides a powerful space for experiencing collective memory, but also for constructing contemporary national identity and visions of the future.
