One of our faculty’s Japanese Studies MPhil students, Joseph Bills, recently won the Cambridge University Library Rose Book-collecting Prize. This competition is run annually and was the first of its kind at any European university, carrying an award of £500.

Joseph submitted his collection of early modern Japanese illustrated books with a short essay explaining how and why he acquired them, as well as a 10 page bibliography. This was then followed by an interview at the library where he got the chance to show some of his books to a distinguished panel of antique book traders, academics and collectors. Competition was reportedly strong this year but the panel decided unanimously to award him the prize, citing his enthusiasm as well as his knowledge of the materials and their production. This marks the second time a student from Japanese Studies has won this award, and Joseph hopes that other students will take on the challenge of building their own collections as well. Well done Joseph!
