The Faculty is sad to learn of the recent death, aged 95, of Kenneth Roy Norman, Professor Emeritus of Indian Studies and leading authority on Pali and other Middle Indo-Aryan Languages.

Born in 1925, Roy Norman studied Classics at Downing College, Cambridge in the early 1950s, specialising in classical philology. He went on to be appointed Lecturer in Indian Studies in 1955 and spent the whole of his academic career in Cambridge, retiring from the Chair of Indian Studies in 1992.

For many years he was President of the Pali Text Society and was made a Fellow of the British Academy in 1985.
