Some of you are already aware of this, but we want to share with you all the extremely sad news of the death of our colleague and friend, Professor Michael Rand.
Michael Rand

Like many of you, we are still coming to terms with this tragic news. Our thoughts are very much with Michael’s family, his friends, colleagues and students at this extremely difficult time.

Michael joined the faculty in 2013, and was a world-leading scholar in the field of Medieval Hebrew Literature. He was working on rhymed-prose narrative (maqama) composed within the cultural and linguistic framework of the Arabic-speaking Mediterranean.

He was also working on Jewish liturgical poetry (piyyut)—mostly in Hebrew, but some also in Aramaic—whose original home is Byzantine-period Palestine. He was a hugely respected scholar, and a much-valued colleague and friend to many.

It is important that we continue to support each other as much as possible at this time, and help from the University’s counselling service is available for anyone who needs it: https://staff.counselling.cam.ac.uk/

An online book of condolences and memories has been opened at https://www.remembr.com/professor.michael.rand

With great sadness,

Christine van Ruymbeke and Barak Kushner
Co-Chairs of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
