The Japanese Studies Section was pleased to host master rakugo performer, Tatekawa Shinoharu, for his week in residence at Cambridge.

On 28 April Shinoharu gave a packed audience a wonderful performance in Japanese and the following day delivered a stellar set of routines in English. The following week we held a half-day long workshop on crafting and understanding rakugo with undergraduates and graduates. The week capped off with an international roundtable featuring University of Tokyo Professor Sato Yukiko, Ms Sarah Stark, Shinoharu-san, and our own Dr Laura Moretti.

The enthusiastic response from students, researchers and interested members of the community demonstrates keen interest in contemporary Japanese society and its links with the past.
