The research agenda of the Chinese Studies subject group is firmly clustered in the humanities. The group is constituted in the spirit of a ‘languages and civilizations’ department. There is a strong focus on modern and pre-modern cultural, institutional and military history; the study of the Chinese script and language (linguistics and second language acquisition); the study of ritual and religion; literature and film; and anthropological approaches to contemporary Chinese society. Research draws on both textual and visual sources as well as field work and experiment-based findings. There is also considerable expertise in the handling of manuscripts and archives.
