The South China Sea is one of the key flashpoints in the Indo-Pacific region where significant geopolitical and geoeconomic interests of regional countries overlap. The Centre for Geopolitics has been following the developments of the South China Sea dispute and has hosted a number of events on this topic to inform the latest development of the situation in this vital region. Continuing these efforts, the Centre invites Dr Ralf Emmers and Dr Laura Southgate to discuss more recent developments in this contested region and how other stakeholders are responding to the challenges on the South China Sea posed by the rise of China and its unilateral claims over the body of water.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Ralf Emmers is Senior Lecturer in International Politics of East Asia and Co-Chair of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD) at SOAS University of London. His research interests cover security studies, international institutions in the Indo-Pacific, and the security and international politics of Southeast Asia. He was previously Dean of the Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) and President’s Chair in International Relations, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.
Laura Southgate is Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the School of Languages and Social Sciences, Aston University. Previously, she was Lecturer in International Security at Cranfield University, based at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, and Lecturer in Defence and International Affairs at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Her research specialises in the international relations and security of Southeast Asia, regionalism and the role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), international relations theory and state sovereignty and intervention.
