On January 27th, FAMES, the Japan Studies section, and the Centre for Geopolitics held the third of their annual collaborative seminars with Keio University’s Center for Strategy examining UK-Japan relations in the context of changing geopolitics. This year, our collaboration was also supported by the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology Open Laboratory for Emergence Strategies (ROLES) and by generous sponsorship from the Fujitsu Future Studies Center. Our panel discussion included prominent Japanese professors specialising in international relations, politics and area studies, as well as leading British academics and policy specialists. We were fortunate for the second year to be joined also by the Japanese ambassador to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki who provided an opening address. Over 90 minutes our panelists presented their views on contemporary global challenges to a packed gathering at Darwin College and participated in a lively question and answer session with the audience. The panel discussion was followed by a private off-the-record dinner discussion for invited guests, including students from across the university at which participants from a diverse range of backgrounds and ages shared their views on contemporary challenges for Anglo-Japanese relations.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with our Japanese colleagues in an event which has become an important and established feature of our work on the contemporary politics and international relations of East Asia. A detailed biography of the participants in the seminar can be found on the event page on the Centre for Geopolitics website, and a video recording of the event can be found on youtube via the link below.
