Dr. David Mozina Presents at Leiden University on Daoist Talismans and Gender in Chinese Thought

Dr. David Mozina recently gave two invited lectures at Leiden University, contributing to prominent academic discussions on Chinese religion and philosophy.

On Wednesday, 7 May 2025, Dr. Mozina delivered a talk titled “The Ontology of Writing: The Workings of Talismans in Daoist Practice” as part of the China Seminar hosted by the Leiden Institute for Area Studies (LIAS). His lecture examined the efficacy of talismanic writing in Daoist ritual, exploring how esoteric inscriptions continue to play a central role in liturgical practices in south China.

The following day, Thursday, 8 May 2025, Dr. Mozina participated in the LUCIP Colloquium on “Gender and Emotion in Chinese Thought and Cultures.” Organised by the Leiden University Centre for Intercultural Philosophy and supported by LIAS and the Dutch Research Council (NWO), the colloquium brought together scholars to reconsider the interplay between gender and emotion in Chinese traditions.
