The story of the Cold War in East Asia is well known, but we understand much less about the twists and turns between geography, intra-Asian relationship, and international history. Many questions remain to be answered: How did geopolitics influence decision makers’ deliberations? How actors in the Cold War adjusted foreign policies along with international law? How did intra-Asian relationships shape America’s foreign policy? And how did the “invisible battlefields” shape military and political contours of Cold War East Asia? While open access to multinational archival documents allows us to revisit these crucial topics, current scholarship leaves these questions unanswered thoroughly. Accordingly, this international workshop aims to gather scholars from America, East Asia, and Europe to generate new dialogues on global Cold War history beyond political and geographical boundaries and how political systems and society were rebuilt and why.
