International Symposium of The Association for Early Modern Japanese Literature (Nihon kinsei bungaku kai 日本近世文学会

This Association leads the field of early modern Japanese literature and the symposium organized at the University of Cambridge was the first ever international conference that the Association has held outside of East Asia since its creation in 1951. Building on Prof Moretti's most recent book, the symposium focused on Early Modern Graphic Narratives (kusazōshi): Making the Most of Digital Data. Scholars who work primarily in Japanese-language academia had a very productive and stimulating intellectual exchange with scholars who work primarily in English-speaking academia. New synergies and collaborations have emerged from two different styles of academic research, fostering ideas on how the study of Japanese literature from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries can bring a global dimension to the study of early modern literature.

The research presentations were enriched by a workshop at the Cambridge University Library and public event that featured collaboration with storytelling performers from Japan
