The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland has announced that Dr. Thomas P. Barrett, who is currently Postdoctoral Research Associate within the faculty, has been awarded the Society's 2023 Bayly Prize for his doctoral dissertation 'Foreigners and the Making of the Chinese Diplomat', for which he received his doctorate for from the University of Oxford in 2022.

The prize was established to celebrate the contribution of Professor Sir Christopher Bayly FBA to the study of world history and Asia and is awarded annually to a distinguished thesis in an Asian subject that has been examined and approved for the PhD degree at a British University. 

The 2023 panel of adjudicators consisted of Professor Benjamin Hopkins (George Washington University), Professor Susanne Brandtstädter (Koln), Professor Magnus Marsden (Sussex), Dr Rian Thum (Manchester), and Professor Nile Green (UCLA).

The Society will hold a prizegiving ceremony at its premises later this year.
