Thomas Rhys Davids was the son of Thomas William Davids, an ecclesiastical historian and pastor of Lion Walk Congregational Church, Colchester, Essex.
Caroline Rhys Davids was the daughter of John Foley, vicar of Wadhurst, Sussex, and Caroline Elizabeth Foley (née Windham). She had a brother, Charles Windham Foley, a solicitor at Morgan and Co, Calcutta, India, and a sister, Mary Cecilia Foley. Through her father, John Foley, the son of John Foley, rector of Holt, Worcestershire, and grandson of Robert Foley, vicar of Mordiford, Herefordshire, she was connected to the Foley family of Witley Court, Worcestershire. Through her mother, Caroline Elizabeth Foley (née Windham), she was a member of the Windham family of Felbrigg Hall, Norfolk.

RD T Thomas William Rhys Davids (1843-1922), Pali scholar
Thomas Rhys Davids was born in Colchester, Essex, 12 May 1843. He was educated at Clive House School, Brighton, and Breslau University, where he studied Greek and Sanskrit. He held a number of posts in the Ceylon Civil Service, including District Judge and Archaeological Commissioner, 1866-72. He was taught Pali by a Buddhist scholar, Yatramulle Unnanse. He returned to England, 1873, and became a barrister, 1877. He was appointed Professor of Pali and Buddhist Literature at University College, London, 1882-1904; Secretary and Librarian of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1885-1904; and Professor of Comparative Religion at Manchester University, 1904-15. He married Caroline Foley, 1894. He was a founder and President of the Pali Text Society, 1881-1922, and a founder of the British Academy, 1901. In his retirement, he wrote for the Manchester Guardian and worked on the preparation of a Pali dictionary. He died in Chipstead, Surrey, 27 December 1922.

RD C Caroline Augusta Foley Rhys Davids (1857-1942), Pali scholar
Caroline Augusta Foley was born in Wadhurst, Sussex, 27 September 1857. She was educated at home and at University College, London, BA, 1886, MA, 1889. She was a member of staff of the Economic Journal, 1891-5. She worked on behalf of various societies for the welfare of women and children, 1890-4, and was a campaigner for women's suffrage, 1896-1914. She married Thomas Rhys Davids, 1894. She was appointed Lecturer in Indian Philosophy at Manchester University, 1910-13, and Lecturer in the History of Buddhism at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, 1918-33. She was Honorary Secretary, 1907-22, and President, 1923-42, of the Pali Text Society. She died in Chipstead, Surrey, 26 June 1942.

RD V Vivien Brynhilda Caroline Foley Rhys Davids (1895-1978)
Vivien Rhys Davids was born in Honor Oak, 19 July 1895. She was educated at Manor Mount Girls' School, Forest Hill; Wynthrop College, Ashton upon Mersey, 1905-12; Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls, 1912-15; and St Hugh's College, Oxford, BA, 1918. She lived in Chipstead, Surrey, 1915-78. She was a councillor of Surrey County Council and chairman of Banstead District Council, 1948-9 and 1960-1. She was active in the Girl Guides' Association and her interests included archaeology, ornithology and music. She lived with her companion, Doris Bland. She was awarded the MBE, 1973. She died in Chipstead, Surrey, 1978.

RD A Arthur Percival Foley Rhys Davids (1897-1917), Pilot
Arthur Rhys Davids was born in Forest Hill, 26 September 1897. He was educated at Sale, Brooklands and Ashton upon Mersey High School for Boys, 1906-7; Wadham House, Hale, 1909; Summer Fields, Oxford, 1909-10; and Eton, 1911-16; and won an exhibition to Balliol College, Oxford. He joined the Royal Flying Corps, 1916, and after training as a pilot was posted to 56 Squadron in France, 1917. He shot down 25 enemy pilots, including the German ace Werner Voss, and was awarded the MC with bar and the DSO, 1917. He went missing in action, 27 October 1917.

Nesta Rhys Davids was born on 3 July 1900. She was educated at Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls. She lived in Amberley, Sussex, 1930-73. She was an active member of the parish council and the Women's Institute. She lived with her companion, Fay Asher. She died in Shoreham by Sea, Sussex, 1973.

RD D Thomas William Davids (1816-84), Congregationalist minister
Thomas Davids was born in Swansea, 11 September 1816. He was educated at local schools and then apprenticed to a chemist. In 1831, after the death of his parents, he was adopted by a wealthy uncle, Thomas Thomas, and worked as a medical assistant. He returned to education at Homerton College, London. He was pastor of Lion Walk Congregational Church, Colchester, Essex, 1841-74. He married Louisa Winter, who died in 1853, and Mary Spelman, 1859. He retired to Upton, Essex, and concentrated on his research in ecclesiastical history. He died in Upton, 11 Apr 1884.

John Windham Foley was the brother of Charles Windham Foley, Mary Cecilia Foley and Caroline Rhys Davids. He was a clergyman, missionary and teacher in India, chiefly in Madras, Mysore and Bangalore

RD W John Foley (1805-88), Vicar of Wadhurst
John Foley was born in Belbroughton, Worcestershire, 19 November 1805. He was educated at Wadham College, Oxford, BA, 1825, MA, 1830. He was a fellow of Wadham College, 1826-46. He was ordained deacon, 1829, and priest, 1830. He was curate of Pershore, Worcestershire, 1846, and vicar of Wadhurst, Sussex, 1847-88. He married Caroline Elizabeth Windham, 1846. He died in 1888.

John Foley was born in Mordiford, Herefordshire, 15 January 1775. He was educated at Stourbridge Free Grammar School, 1783-6; Kingswinford School, Staffordshire, 1786-90; the College School, Hereford, 1790-2; and Wadham College, Oxford, BA, 1795, MA, 1801. He was a fellow of Wadham College, 1796-1805, and was ordained deacon, 1797, and priest, 1799. He was curate of Wibbenhall, Worcestershire, 1803-12, and Astley, Worcestershire, 1809-12. He married Martha Hickman Hayley, 1806. He was rector of Holt, Worcestershire, 1812-47. He died, 11 August 1847.
