Professor James Montgomery said “I am deeply honoured by my election to a British Academy Fellowship, not only because it is a recognition of my scholarship but also because it is an acknowledgment, at the national level, of the importance of my subject, Classical Arabic literature, especially poetry. It is also an endorsement of my department (Middle Eastern Studies) and the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, the institution that has supported my scholarship over the last twenty-seven years. Little did I imagine when I fell in love with Arabic poetry as an undergraduate that it would lead to the British Academy."
